Field Notes

Description:

three fruiting bodies: 20cm diameter, 10 cm diameter, and 4x7cm oval. upper surface has felt texture. spore bearing surface is pores. flesh very firm but not wooden. blades of grass were embedded in the flesh as if it had extruded around them rather than pushing them aside. At the margin the flesh is 1 cm thick. Under the larger cap there were several smaller fan shaped caps. The margin of the largest cap was a deep yellow. Pore surface is light brown and stains dark brown when brusied. Pores are irregularly shaped and approx 1-2 pores per mm.

Habitat:

under coniferous tree in needle litter

Notes:

spore print was unsuccessful but all surfaces of cut sections of cap became covered with mustard yellow velvet after a couple of days.
