Field Notes

Description:

These beautiful "slugs of the sea" are my favorite creature to find. They tend to be much smaller than the picture suggests.

Habitat:

Usually on rocks, eel grass, mud. Depth range 20 ft-60 ft.

Notes:

Feeds on small snails such as Margarites pupillus and Lacuna carinatus by cracking the shells with its jaws. Also feeds on sea anemones, hydroids, tunicates, and bryozoans. Their egg mass contains about 350,000 eggs.

Thanks everyone!
Thank you all. I spend most of my time diving, admiring these.
wow, absolutely beautiful!!
:O :O :O :O :O SPEECHLESS>>>its a fantastic creature/photo
Eliza, the last picture is most accurate. At that depth, certain colors go away and depending on visibility and light it can look a different color. As you can see the "tips" that are facing the camera have a hint of yellow, the ones that have a side view are just white.
is this there real beautiful color like the sea mist foam green? Enigma
Thanks guys! Sergio, congrats on your 3,500!
Thank you Karen and Lauren. These are my favorite creatures to find when I do dive (except Harbor seals, they are too playful)
They vary in adult size from 20 to 600 mm (0.79 to 24 in). When diving, due to bending light, they sometimes seem as big as a football! Then you put your hand near it and realizes it's not bigger than a penny!
