Description:

The common baron (Euthalia aconthea) - often called simply "baron" - is a medium-sized nymphalid butterfly native to India and Southeast Asia. It flies with stiff wing beats and often glides. The wing is not flapped very far below the horizontal. Introduced in Papua.

Habitat:

Observed here in a large semi-urban yard/garden adjacent to a disturbed patch of remnant forest.

Notes:

One of four species of previously alien Lepidoptera recorded in Papua (the Indonesian part of New Guinea) according to the Papua Insects Foundation. http://www.papua-insects.nl/index/Hot%20news.htm
