Field Notes

Description:

We're a first grade class that planted sunflower seeds in our classroom. We've just moved them to our school garden. They're still very little. They started as a few inches tall with 4 little leaves. They've already grown a little and have gotten more leaves. We've learned that they could grow up to 12 feet tall!

Habitat:

Our school garden gets lots of sun. Since it's spring now, we've also been getting lots of rain. We've learned that there are some dangers in our habitat for our little plants. They might get eaten by animals, or broken in the wind or bad weather, or stepped on if people are not careful. We hope not!

Notes:

We've learned that sunflowers attract birds and insects. So far all we've seen around our sunflowers are ants and a ladybug. We've learned that most pollinators will not come until the plants have grown flowers.

We've seen some holes in the soil near the stems of some of the sunflowers. We think they might be worm holes.

We've observed that some of the leaves have holes in them. We think this might be from where insects are eating them.

Congratulations, Elm Grade One. having a plant flower is wonderful reward for all the hard work you put in taking care. The flower is very pretty indeed.
Late July 2022 Update. The sunflower has finally bloomed! The third picture shows what it now looks like and it's about 12 feet tall. Sadly, of the 23 sunflower seedlings our class planted, this is the only one that survived:( We think it was either birds, chipmunks, or squirrels that got the others. Oh well... we're still proud of the one that's still around!
