Description:
They can grow to be 2 inches long. They have an olive-green body with red bands across their abdomen; their wings are mostly clear. tThey have tuffs of hairs on their body. they have a needle like mouth-part called a proboscis to eat. The proboscis stays coiled up until it approaches a flower. It then uncoils to dip deep into a flower for nectar.
Habitat:
Fields, gardens and water edges.
Notes:
Predators include birds, mantids, spiders,bats and other moth-caterpillar eaters.
I love watching them. Every year they eat off my butterfly bush, and I am always excited to see them.
