Field Notes

Description:

Looks like a giant mosquito, but it's not. Has very look legs and a and one set of wings, Brownish in color. lots of detail up close.

Habitat:

Found in Connecticut, but can be found in several states in North America. It might like the pond or garden area. I found this one on my window sil.

Notes:

They do not bite and they don't have a long proboscis(snout). Females have a needle-like stinger, but it is used to deposit eggs in moist soil.
