Description:

"The tall flowering stem bears several somewhat drooping, orange flowers, spotted reddish brown, with strongly recurved petals and petal like sepals; a green streak at the base of each flower segment forms a green star."
This one is embedded in a bower of Wild Hydrangeas (the white flower clusters in the background).

Habitat:

Wet meadows, swamps, and woods

Notes:

Taken on Wayah Bald Mountain, Western North Carolina, USA
"The largest and most spectacular of the native Lillies, up to 40 flowers recorded on a single plant. Native Americans used the bulbs for soups."
