Field Notes

Description:

Nymphalidae; Nymphalinae; Heliconiini; Vindula dejone dejone Erichson 1834. This butterfly, like all members of the subfamily Nymphalinae, appears to have only four legs. This is because the front legs are very tiny and nonfunctional.

Habitat:

This Lesser Cruiser was spotted, mud-puddling, on stony ground, at the edge of the road during a bug hunt in the local hills.
