Description:

Spider, about 1/2 inch wide. Black and white with red spikes. Web approximately 7 - 8 feet tall and wide, under a Live Oak tree.

I saw your pic. Very nice!! They look so similar, I guess they didn't change much as they spread out across the world.
Darwinist, your spotting reminded me of a similar species I saw years ago in Western Australia. The markings on its abdomen looked like a clown face: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7281359
Great spot - all I seem to find under live oaks is chiggers!
Thanks for the name! Yes they are beautiful. I see them pretty often under the Live Oak trees. I had to buy a new camera to get a decent photo. :)
