I came to it from a different angle in the end - as I found it on a maple tree I googled 'maple pests' & got it almost immediately!
Must be... http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/6573289
Got there in the end!
Thanks for all your help Ashish - sitting in India doesn't appear to prevent you from ID'ing species all over the world! I will do some more research & hopefully I will be able to narrow it down further.
Once you find body structure... know subfamily and specie and Genus... and you able to find exact specie.. I can not say anything more sitting in India... :)
I'm not sure I would have spotted that one Ashish! But then I guess there are all sorts of things I miss every day because they are so well camouflaged!
Hmmm.. you have choice but... I feel structure very close with... http://bugguide.net/node/view/438469/bgimage

Thanks guys! Ashish it's a pity they haven't ID'd those caterpillars on bugguide as they do look very similar. I was thinking maybe it is a Forage looper moth as they are really common round here but it is possible a bit large.
