This praying mantis reappeared after a week and I was really happy to see it. i think that we have forged a friendship and it was as curious and watchful as ever.
It was extremely interested in knowing what was behind the door and hung upside down ,peeking in every time the door opened.
it was very rainy yesterday and i thought that maybe it was ready for its second moult. But i did not see an exo skeleton and it has disappeared once more.
i was relieved to see it because I was a little worried that he might have got sucked into the vacuum ,when my husband was picking up the fall leaves.
this praying Mantis disappeared as mysteriously as it appeared. would have liked to see it once more. During this brief period I was able to observe it's behavior during the time it was preparing for moulting. it moulted very successfully . Fortunately for it, the humidity and weather conditions were ideal to have a successful molt.
I also observed that it loved being watched as much as it likes watching.
Very beautiful insect. I wish it a lot of happiness in its own world!!
i found this fact on the Project Noah wall very fascinating!
"The praying mantis can pick up sound frequencies just beyond the range of humans through a single ear located in the center of its chest. It's the only animal known to listen to the world with one ear!"
I think they are amazing creatures! I even saw photos online one one that had captured & killed a hummingbird - I haven't posted the link as I think it is distressing to see but I do now check there aren't any of these guys hanging around by the feeders. I found this one the other night & relocated it to another part of the yard after I took it's photo - http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7383367
of course, it probably flew straight back!
Im glad you liked the link! It is a very useful insect! In marital arts the praying mantis is a form of Kung Fu!! It is a highly regarded insect!
And Thank you for the kind words Emma! :)
Pyoung, I found an exoskeleton of the Mantis. Looks like it moulted. That could explain its behaviour. They are always on the look out for a safe place to molt . There biggest fear is crickets.
Thanks for sharing the link . it really made me appreciate and value this insect even more.
BTW, Thank you so much!! Congratulations for becoming a Ranger too and thanks for enriching project Noah!
Hi Emma, I found a website that is interesting and there is information regarding keeping the Praying Mantis as a pet.
http://kerryg.hubpages.com/hub/praying-mantis-care
It shows people holding them and it says they do not bite unless, they are attacking for prey. And the bite is similar to an ant bite.
This praying Mantis is back and is sitting outside near the same bush right outside the door and it is very watchful It is scary considering how it swiped at me last time.
I am going to change my route and use the backdoor instead.
Thats funny Emma!! Yes I guess we were bitten by various bugs and animals.
I wonder if your Praying mantis has laid eggs near your doorway and perhaps it was guarding them? Or maybe there's a plant that has tasty aphids that the Praying mantis eat for their supper? :)
@pyoung you are lucky you were not bitten. But this praying mantis did Ambush me!! It was right outside the front door, from morning to evening, near a bush.
It must have been watching me go in and out.
In the evening ,when I returned after grocery shopping,It swiped and brushed past me and then dived into another bush.
That must have been fun,to have them walk on your arm like that!!
They are cute!
Thanks for the interesting article.
it says that they can turn their heads 180 degrees.Isn't that how much we humans can turn our heads?
When we were children, we would put them on our arms to watch them walk. I never was bitten. They are good stewards of the garden and eat all the insects for you. I found a link for you.

thanks pyoung! Once I met a man and he told me that I must stomp on these as they can bite hard! I rather stay away from them. I am not going to stomp on anything!
