Field Notes

Description:

The plant has glands that produce a sticky, sweet-smelling, and edible nectar.

Habitat:

The plant originates in the Himalayan mountains, but its now an ivasive species in Europe and US. The aggressive seed dispersal, coupled with high nectar production which attracts pollinators, often allows the Himalayan Balsam to outcompete native plants. Nearby water.

Notes:

Saw it on a canoe tour at the Szigetköz in Hungary.
