Northern Water Snake (juvenile)

Our North American Nerodia water snakes are often pretty aggressive but are basically non-venomous. I say "basically" because they were only recently discovered to produce a very weak venom. They will bite, but do no harm, which is good considering how common they are. They also produce a nasty smelling musk which they smear all over anyone who handles them. I've only been bitten a couple of times, but I've been musked many times. They're great snakes to have around and I always enjoy observing them.

Scott... How much venomous these small water snakes are... In my 20 years trekking... I really blessed by them... not get attacked by them with many close encounters...!! Talking about Western ghats of India..

Yeah, young water snake. Not sure what varieties are found in that area, looks like Nerodia sipedon.

Maybe a young watersnake?
