Newly Emerged Seven-Spotted Ladybug
Coccinella septempunctata
37.8564, -122.298
Field Notes
Description:
When I first spotted this ladybug in Aquatic Park in Berkeley, CA., I thought I had discovered a new amber colored species. Unknown to me at the time, I was looking at a newly emerged Seven-Spotted ladybug. You can see the pupa right beneath the ladybug in the first photo. It takes half a day for the spots to show. The ladybug pumps blood into its wings to expand and exercise them.
