Field Notes

Description:

This tree has been a mystery spotting for awhile. But when the seed pods burst in the fall, a friend recognized it as a "popcorn tree." The name fits. Native to eastern Asia, attractive but invasive in the Southern U.S. Here's the same tree in August: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/37279162.

Notes:

Other common names: Florida aspen, chicken tree, gray popcorn tree, candleberry tree.

Alternate scientific name: Sapium sebiferum
