Finally, we got it!! Curculionidae, Baridinae, Peridinetini, Peridinetus cretaceus. There are no pictures on the web besides ours on Project Noah!! Only illustrated reference would be here in #15: http://www.sil.si.edu/digitalcollections/bca/bca_12_04_05/pdf/bca_12_04_05_547.pdf Proof for the reports of Costa Rica: http://www.crbio.cr/portalCRBio/species/342184 Bibliography for Peridinetus cretaceus: http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/name/Peridinetus%20cretaceus Categorized as "doubtful species", this applies only for the name, not for the species, name is so called temporary valid, so nice enough for Project Noah: http://www.gbif.org/species/1228286 Catalog of Life of August 2014: Taxon still valid: http://www.catalogueoflife.org/col/details/species/id/7821594 Original description by Champion: http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/582892#page/187/mode/1up So, a lot of information, but no picture! Only here on Project Noah!! Another one, now with corrected scientific name: https://www.flickr.com/photos/chris_chafer/10015863424/ Confirmed ID: http://naturecloseups.com/posts/black-and-white-weevil
This is the other cholus - nothing like my black and white fellow. Always glad to have your opinion Bayucca, I'm far from certain in my identification. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/61206013
I checked Eruptus as well, but in my eyes the texture and markings are not the same. Show me the other Cholus guy, please.
I looked at Cholus too - by coincidence I had been looking at that very page in BCA when I found this guy, having just identified another of my spottings as Cholus. But, as Bayucca says, none seems to be an exact match. The photo Chun found is certainly the same but without any reference there is no way to know if it has been identified correctly. There are an awful lot of weevils to look at in BCA! The one I found that has very similar markings is identified as Cryptorrhynchus eruptus. But "Cryptorrhynchus" implies it has the snout tucked under and "hidden" as some weevils do and this one was not like that... http://www.sil.si.edu/digitalcollections/bca/navigation/bca_12_04_04/bca_12_04_04showplate.cfm?id=829
Cholus costaricensis with probably correct ID: http://naturecloseups.com/posts/black-and-white-weevil Same ID, but most probably not correct: http://www.flickr.com/photos/chris_chafer/10015863424/ not even similar to ours and the one from the link with correct ID. Another similar one from Sergio: https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/17028120 I checked the whole curculionidae library of BCA, unfortunately no match at all... Another one without ID: http://www.agefotostock.com/en/Stock-Images/Rights-Managed/V27-914093
Chun, I have seen this as well, but I am a little bnit sceptic about Cholus, similar in colors, but if you look at the specimens here, none of is matching exactly, besides black and white: http://www.sil.si.edu/DigitalCollections/bca/navigation/bca_12_04_04/bca_12_04_04showplate.cfm?id=793 http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/17091039 Superstock is often not very reliable, but it could be that this one it is correct ;-)... Thanks for your input, Chun, I have it in my favs for ID since quite a long time... Need to refresh my memory...
Looks like Chun found an ID for this spotting. Beautiful series Anne.
Probably a Cholus species as mentioned here http://www.superstock.com/stock-photos-images/4094-30229
LOVE THIS FACE! what a schnoz! even for a weevil!
