Field Notes

Description:

This loosestrife is a herbaceous perennial, some 1 to 1.5m tall and often forming clonal colonies of numerous erect flowering stems. The flowers are clustered tightly on top of the stem, about 2cm across, purple with six petals.

Habitat:

Native to Palearctic (Old World) and widespread and usually associated with poorly drained areas, such as wet meadows and marshes; or lake shores or streams. Here observed in many such locations in and around the Krka NP of Croatia. The park is in the place where river Krka forms a series of waterfalls and lakes; it is surrounded by a magnificent dense broad-leaved forest, and its shallow coastal waters are rich in vegetation.

Notes:

As reported in Wikipedia, the purple loosestrife was/is used as an astringent medicinal herb to treat diarrhea and dysentery; it is considered safe to use for all ages. It is also used and cultivated for ornamental purposes, in wetlands and poorly drained terrains; however it is considered invasive outside its native range, where it was imported.
