Field Notes

Description:

This particular spider is a female, which is about twice to three times the size of the male. Her body is about 7mm long with a legspan of about 18mm. The abdomen is shiny silver above with brown markings, yellow and white on the sides and green below. Legs are green.

Habitat:

I found this individual in the edge of a deciduous forest on a web she had built in a shrub.

Notes:

This was a very pretty spider. Orchard orbweavers often spin their orb webs in shrubs found in open forests. They are easily disturbed and often abandon the web and drop to the ground when disturbed. They spend a lot of time hanging upside down in the middle of their web, but when on vegetation tend to hide on the underside of leaves.

Julio, I really enjoy macro photography and, like you, I spend a lot of time turning over stones and peeking under loose tree bark to find some of the most interesting animals around. I'm very much enjoying your photos and participation in Project Noah.
