Field Notes

Description:

I spotted this ladybug eating aphids on dandelions in Aquatic Park Berkeley. I thought is was a regular convergent ladybug, but noticed that the "eye spots" were dots and not slants. The Lost Ladybug Project identified it as a sub-species of the Five-spotted Lady Beetle (Hippodamia quinquesignata). Apparently the species is confined to the west coast, west of the Sierra / Cascade mountains.

Habitat:

Aquatic Park, Berkeley, CA dandelion plant.
