Field Notes

Description:

Common whitethroats are easy to recognize by their ... white throats. They nest near the ground in thick prickly bushes. With lots of patience, you may be lucky to see them in hedges and in the dunes. However, they are constantly in motion and only show themselves for short moments before hiding in the next bush. During nesting season, the common whitethroat eats mostly insects. Berries become part of the diet as the summer progresses. Common whitethroats depart in August for tropical Africa, where their diet consists almost exclusively of berries. From Greece they depart in September.

Habitat:

This is a bird of open country and cultivation, with bushes for nesting. The nest is built in low shrub or brambles, and 3–7 eggs are laid.

Notes:

Greek common names: Θαμνοτσιροβάκος, Διπλοσυκαλλίδα
