Description:

Fungus growing in a rotten tree, looks like brown-sharp edged clam shells

Habitat:

Adirondack State Park, NY.
Ha-De-Ron-Dah wilderness

They are definitely a nice thing to come across and photograph, but, as Jim mentioned, if you want to get down to IDing, many observations have to be provided. :)
Thanks Jim... I can't provide any of the gill color and shape, when I took this I wasn't thinking about an ID, just an interesting photo while backpacking. But I know for future reference :-)
As with most polypores, final identification is aided by a description (shape, size and colour) of the gills/pores on the underside of the fungus. A cross section of the fungus is also helpful. The green pictured here is algae.
