Leafwing Butterfly
9.81845, -84.9493
Field Notes
Description:
This is one of the many leafwing butterflies that we encounter here in Costa Rica. This one is about 3" from top to bottom. It is red antennae. They all have an amazing posture, coloring, and shape in order to camouflage them from potential predators. This one, along with others I have found, are normally hanging upside down on leaves in order to avoid being noticed.
Habitat:
This one was found in an area just outside of an urban setting within 1.5kms to the ocean. Specifically, it was hanging on a tropical almond tree. The area is generally a tropical secondary forest with sparse primary forest around river beds and in higher elevations.
Notes:
Subfamily - Charaxinae
