Field Notes

Description:

Adult Cottonmouth in a defensive mode showing the white mouth. The white mouth is where the name cottonmouth originated. Will bite and is venomous. This snake is one of three adults and two juveniles that I saw. Was outside its den with two other adults and four ribbon snakes.

Habitat:

Rivers, lakes, swamps and canals. This snake lives in a swamp and in winter hibernates in the crevices of the nearby rock cliffs.

Be careful.... He does NOT look like a happy camper..,
If I'm ever in that part of the state, I'll definitely have to check out this road! :-)
Wild, found it on Snake Road in Southwest Illinois. One of three adults that were sunning outside their den. Close by were four ribbon snakes. We also found two juvenile cottonmouths and a racer outside another den. Look on the web and it has a lot of information about this road.
