Caterpillar
16.71, -92.61
Field Notes
Description:
This very hairy caterpillar has orange tubercles on the top of the body and pale orange ones on the sides, all with long bristles emerging from each one. The head end has more bristles than the tail end. The ventral side is a mottled black and white. In the second picture you can see how the crochets (foot hooks) are retracted each time a proleg is lifted from the substrate. This larva is 2 cm long and I think it is a Nymphalid caterpillar.
Habitat:
On a bush, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, 2,200 meters elevation.
