Field Notes

Description:

I've seen this plant for years and wondered what it is; when it's dry and brown, the seed stems smell nice when crushed. These had lots of seed stems, but green, and I couldn't tell if the flowers were just starting or about to finish. Edit - based on subsequent sightings, I think they were just beginning.

Habitat:

Wooded park

Thanks for the direction! It's definitely not Divine Salvia - I'm in northern VA, and this is growing in all the parks. I think I need to sit down with a field guide and search, but you've possibly narrowed my search there.
