Oof, you're right - so many to choose from! Maybe I need better photos. I wasn't trying too hard that day - too overcast and I didn't bring my flash.
Asters are always tough to I.D. but maybe genus Eurybia or Symphyotrichum. http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=EURYB, http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=SYMPH4
