According to the book, it is! LOL. I have tried many species and have my preferences and this one looks like a combination between two of my absolute fav mushrooms
I was thinking the same exact thing!!! They look absolutely delish!!! I bet they would be great sauteed!
It's growing on the cut end of a downed tree in a local Nat Forest service area. The end was cut to maintain the trail. I need to go back and soon to see if there is anything more there... yum!
Karen, that is an awesome spotting!!! Is it growing on a chunk of overturned cut log? It looks as if it is. Cannot really tell for certain as the "base" is completely covered by the fungi.
My first thought was looks like the Oregon Caves Nat Monument! I hadn't had time to look it up, but I found this in one of my books: Hydnum abietis found on firs in the P Northwest is larger and turns salmon-buff with age. Both are choice edibles... I should have snagged a hunk. Maybe I'll go back next week and see if it's grown more. This is the pacific bear's head. Lion's mane is more even
That looks awesome! Like a mini cave wall. Reminds me of my spotting. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7331003
