Description:

The Red-banded Hairstreak (Calycopis cecrops) is a butterfly native to the southeastern United States. It feeds on fallen leaves of sumac species and other trees. Its size ranges from 0.9–1.25 inches.

Habitat:

It lives near coastal areas and edges.

Notes:

She moved the filaments at the end of the wings like a little fan-like thingy.
(the pics are not very good but it gives an idea of how the butterfly looks like.)

And what it does on the back of her wings is so weird.it is like a luring mechanism to distract predators, I imagine?

You are welcome Marta! We get them round here in Tennessee too - such a pretty little butterfly!

I have added two other pics. They are not very good but at least it shows how the butterfly looks from above and the colors.
