This Assassin Bug was spotted on unidentified foliage in our backyard
Notes:
I have spotted Euagoras plagiatus, from time to time, and I always ran into the same problem when trying to identify it. There are hundreds of photos, on various websites, which look exactly like mine. So, that made the first part of the identification process (matching my bug with identified specimens) relatively easy. However, as we all know, it is also necessary to prove that the bug is documented as being present in the part of the world where we saw it, in this case, the Philippines. It didn't take too long to find https://indiabiodiversity.org/species/show/276138#distribution..... This article mentions " Assam, East Garo hills, Myanmar, Andaman, Java, Philippines". Great, problem solved....or was it? There is just one picture of a bug which has the correct shape and proportions, but the colours were all different from my specimen and it wasn't hairy, like mine. Once I relaxed a little and had another look, everything became clear. I was looking at a dead, preserved specimen which had a great big pin through its abdomen to secure it in place. There was the answer, when bugs (of any kind) die, their colours often change or fade and when preserved in alcohol, hairs are often lost. Case closed. There was nothing wrong with the science or the picture. I just have to learn to be more careful .
