Field Notes

Description:

Resting with entire wing spread flat on a surface. Initially thinking this is an Agathia laetata but reference pics available (http://eol.org/pages/271150/overview) don't have the brown strips in the middle of the wing as clearly seen here. Anyone care to help ID?

Species ID Suggestions

Emerald garden moth

Agathia lycaenaria

Agathia carissima

Thanks for the suggestion @BenjiSun. Am actually inclined to favor Agathia carissima over the others too. :-)
the patterns on the wings and on the back seem to match Agathia carissima quite well. this is also found in Hong Kong, which shares quite a number of species of insects with Phillippines, since HK is comparatively close to Luzon.
Thanks for the info and link @lori.tas. Had the spotting been in Mindanao islands which are closer to Borneo and Indonesia then maybe this would be an A. rubrilineata. But the spotting is in the main island of Luzon similar to Ann's (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7211175). But then again who knows? Yup hard to find the single link that would say it categorically. And the search goes on... :-)
Eric, A. prasinaspis only seems to be found in Australia. This photo of Agathia rubrilineata ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agathia_rubrilineata ) looks nearly spot on, but then it's listed as living in Borneo and parts of Indonesia. I'm having a really had time finding anything that looks right AND is also found in the Philippines.
Hi Ashish and Dan - what about prasinaspis? http://lepbarcoding.org/geometridae/species.php?region=1&id=68752
Thanks for the link Ashish. Too bad the blog did not mention the species name but the pictures are exact. Toxic? hmmm :-)
Interesting... http://casaveneracion.com/day-flying-colorful-moths-are-toxic/
Thanks Ashish. I think we all agree this is an Agathia. We just cannot narrow it down to exact species. In anycase I'd just ID this as Agathia sp until more experts can categorically ID it as pisina, carissima or lycaenaria. Thanks for the help. :-)
I am confirm and feel its lycaenaria what match with your moth's body structure(wings here)... its depend on you what to select and how to match...!!
Hi Ashish. I think Dan is right on it being more pisina or carissima. The lycaenaria does not have the more solid brown patch on the tip of the upper wings.
Ashish, I think its more similar to pisina or carissima than lycaenaria.

I was just thinking the same thing. The differences are hardly noticeable.
Dan hope you check its tail like end is double what match with Agathia lycaenaria...!!
Just looked at your link Ashish and it's also similar. Hmmm carrisima or pisina?
Thanks Ashish. Finally starting a moth collection here. Found these moths in a restaurant which was a moth haven! Will upload other other species I found from the same place :-)

Maybe Agathia pisina? http://images.google.com/imgres?q=Agathia+pisina&hl=en&gbv=2&biw=1276&bih=680&tbm=isch&tbnid=HTrkaSBPL3X3aM:&imgrefurl=http://picasaweb.google.com/lepido.france/HeteroceresArfak&docid=9iMngoHmqQf4QM&w=1600&h=1064&ei=6ml7TquHI4n50gHorsyoAg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=962&vpy=199&dur=3472&hovh=183&hovw=275&tx=146&ty=97&page=1&tbnh=141&tbnw=189&start=0&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:0
