Red and Black Polydesmid Millipede
Polydesmida sp.?
-27.3388, 153.078
Field Notes
Description:
Red and black millipede with a cylindrical body, reasonably large body segment, and approx. 4-5 cms in length. Spotted by ShannaB on a sandy track. A native species? PS: The only other image I've found online that looks remotely like this specimen has no common or scientific name. There are quite literally hundreds of native millipede species in Australia, although this may be an imported species. Anyway, a couple of handy references - https://www.polydesmida.info/millipedesofaustralia/key2orders.html https://www.polydesmida.info/millipedesofaustralia/index.html
Habitat:
Boondall Wetlands Reserve - http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/environment-waste/natural-environment/en… The trees in this spotting location are predominantly She-oak (casuarina) and Melaleuca species.
Notes:
Spotted with my PN buddies Shanna Bignell and Pamela Sai. Thank you both for such a wonderful day :-)
