Description:

Lichen?

Habitat:

Spotted this growing on the bark of a young-ish maple tree. (Tree is about 6" diameter).

Notes:

Seems to be more present on the NE side of the tree

Here's a link I've found helpful in my attempts at ID'ing lichens: http://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/interesting/lichens/glossary.shtml I think your photo is of the lichen that humming birds use to make their nests out of - along with some silk from spider webs. Perhaps some kind of Pseudocyphellaria ?
