Field Notes

Description:

approximately 1 and 1/2 inches in shell diameter...very darkly colored. Spikey ridged shell.

Notes:

A baby turtle who suddenly appeared close to where i was working in my yard... it was mud covered and i hosed it off took it inside to show my mom, and took its pic, then took it back out and released it where i found it. I think it is a baby snapping turtle but not certain. There is a pond in the field behind our house, and i suspect it came from there or it's mother came from there and laid her eggs in a damp area in my yard..

Alligator and common snapping turtles look very similar as babies, with both of them having beaks. You can tell them apart even at this young age by looking for the fleshy "eyelashes". Alligators have them, common do not. Yours does not have them. Yep, an Alligator Snapping Turtle baby. The beaks on the adults are wack. You wouldn't wanna put your finger near that.
It does look like a snapping turtle!!
