Definitely Erato: 4 spots and complete white stripe on the forewing. Melpomene looks "identical", but have only 3 spots and interrupted white stripe. And some funny info for you guys: Freshly captured Melpomene smells of fried-rice and Erato from Wytch-hazel (Hamamelis virginiana)! NO joke! It is an observation by Bernard d'Abrera ;-)...
it is for that reason I suggested both species... I couldn't determine which of the two were the correct. I pride myself on being accurate. However, I am not a biologist, a major in the sciences, or a specialist in lepidoptera. I only concede that time, and time again, your identifications are perfect.
