Field Notes

Description:

This mushroom has a really wrinkly cap that is brown and a white/cream colored stalk. It's cap is dry. The tree near it I think is an elm tree but I am no expert.

Habitat:

These are growing where the water from my air conditioner drips from the roof of my carport. We don't get many mushrooms they don't grow out here often since it is desert.

Next time you come across this or similiar dark-capped morels, try this: grab a blade and slice the fungus in half; if it is hollow, it might be a black true morel. Here's a great view of what you should expect to see if you slice the mushroom: http://wildfoodmushroomsfishing.blogspot.com/2010/03/false-morel-identification.html Personally, I think it might be a true morel. But I haven't even seen one in real life, so I could always be wrong. :)
What should I look for? I will see if I can get a picture of where the cap meets the stem.
Looks like a morel OR a false morel. It depends on how the cap meets the stem.
