Field Notes

Description:

Individual "shelves" range from 2-10 inches across. These shelves are made up of many tiny tubular filaments (hyphae). The mushroom grows in large brackets - some have been found that weigh over 100 pounds (45 kg). Caps: 5-30 cm across and up to 20 cm deep; up to 3 cm thick; fan-shaped to semicircular or irregular; more or less planoconvex; smooth to finely wrinkled; suedelike; bright yellow to bright orange when young, frequently fading in maturity and with direct sunlight.

Habitat:

It is most commonly found on wounds of trees, mostly oak, though it is also frequently found on eucalyptus, yew, sweet chestnut, and willow, as well as conifers in some species.

Notes:

Edible, many think they taste like chicken. This was very large!

hi, very awesome shot, i love this one. I have a little question, i want to make (with my spottings, so far) a collection-guide ( and maybe more) about fungi, with more than usually 1 picture at the booksite per species. Therefore i collect mine pictures also here on my pc. When i found this one,i was stunned. i want to have the pictures from this spotting ( prefferd as original size) My question to you, can i download/copy your spotting, OR have you still the originals and would give them to me. thanks for your time in advance!!

It's looks like that, but this has a stem and when I looked it up says its not supposed to have a stem?
