Description:
This rare visitor is for my eyes the most beautiful butterfly I have experienced. Family: Brushfoots, Nymphalidae. Sub: Longwings, Heliconiinae. Wingspan: 4.4 - 5.7cm (1.75 to 2.25 inch) Above: Pale brownish orange and dark markings, narrow light median band with dark orange base. Below: Brown; forewing with basal orange scaling; hindwing tan mottling, cream and dark brown; hindwing lacks silver spots. Sex similar - male larger. Host Plant: Violets and passion flower.
Habitat:
Sunny sites, roadsides, rough pasture and utility easements.
