Field Notes

Description:

45–50 mm wing span. Striking dark brown, red, and black wing pattern. The dark wings possess orange bands that cross the fore wings and on the outer edge of the hind wings; white spots on the dorsal fore wings near the front margin; reddish bars on dorsal surface of all four wings

Habitat:

Europe, Asia and North America; The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates north in spring, and back south in autumn.

they are also still flying here (dutch 5 min german boarder "aachen") . in fact last week was the first one i saw this year.
We got a nice late summer time. It's still around 24°C in this region during the day. But I think this is the second generation of this summer and several of them stay and may die in winter.
That's great! Apart from small whites and skippers there are virtually no butterflies left around my place... winter's coming!
