Description:

This is a moss and I believe a liverwort on a live hardwood tree. Possibly growing on damaged bark. Looks like Braided Liverwort but it is red.

The moss could be a number of different genus', but the red liverwort is a species of Frullania. Out here on the west coast we have F. nisquallensis which grows on the bark of hardwood trees, and with increased exposure to your skin, you will develop a slight rash. That could be it, but its hard to tell without seeing it under a microscope. I'm Pretty confident its a species of Frullania.
