Field Notes

Description:

The photos for this spotting are not for the squeamish! Be forewarned!

The "Thunder Pumper" is a bird with a long straight bill, rusty brown crown, brown streaks on chest, brown back, greenish legs, and black streak on side of neck.

Habitat:

Freshwater wetlands.

Notes:

This Bittern spent at least 5 minutes dunking the frog into the water repeatedly before attempting the swallow. I have included here just a few of the shots in the 12-shot series, which can all be viewed on Flickr at this link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dsdavenport/4508138589/in/photostream
