Field Notes

Description:

Several of these fruits spotted during a hike in a neighbours deciduous forest. Our village friend informs me they are good to keep in the house to keep spiders out. Also others say they keep mice out (this is definately not true) - Have noted local squirrals eat them during the winter.

Habitat:

Forest and open park land.

Notes:

There is a large tree at the Rankin house above Ripley (this museum is a key part of the anti-slavary underground railway history).

Ha ha, good idea! I was actually just on the edge of our woods looking down to check for poison ivy when a 5" diameter fruit landed with a thud no more than a foot in front of me! At least we don't have any coconuts growing round here!
Karen that would have been an injury! Hard hat required for hiking!?
We have lots of these growing round here - one narrowly missed hitting me on the head recently!
