Field Notes

Description:

Stinky fungi growing in wood chips at a park. These had emerged, and many more "eggs" were pushing up out of the wood chips.

Habitat:

Wood chips at a playground. Beneath oak trees.

Notes:

A large number of puffballs are emerging at this location too. Thanks to lynne.warren for posting her spotting of these funky fungi earlier: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7363704.

My latest spotting of the early stages of Ravenel's stinkhorn: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7444164. Poor Ravenel, having a fungus like this named after him...
One form of mushroom that I need to see (or should I say smell) for myself in the future! Nice spotting Kristal. :)
