Field Notes

Description:

This restless little species is one of the most widespread dragonflies. Very active on the wing in warm weather, it can even be seen in flight as late as December in some years.

Habitat:

It basks on sheltered bare ground extracting heat from the sun exposed ground which is why it s often seen flying in late autumn.

Notes:

Fairly easy to approach with care. I have often found that it will be more accepting if you approach it in a low profile, moving slowly and keeping close to the ground.

The first image in this series shows a Common Darter feeding on an insect that it has just caught.
