Field Notes

Description:

Spider web on grass

Habitat:

My front lawn. Many crickets call this yard their symphony hall. The resident of this web appears to have taken an interest...

Notes:

A spider seemingly about the diameter of a nickel retreated down the funnel just before I snapped off the shot.

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (2)

This web was produced by a funnel weaver spider (family: Agelenidae). There are lots of species in North America (about 300 or so). So it would be difficult, I think, to narrow down the ID much further.
http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7055048 i had a similar spotting ,except that the hole was covered with the web too. After much debate ,we came to the conclusion that it is a funnel web spider's home.
