Field Notes

Description:

Brown with raptorial front legs (like a praying mantis), broad and flat. This adult was about 2 cm (1 in) in length.

Habitat:

These large insects spend much of their life in the water of rivers, streams, and lakes, but will leave the water and fly to new locations. It feeds on other insects, tadpoles, and may even take small fish.

Notes:

They are often known as "toe biters" as they can inflict a painful bite if handled roughly.
