Field Notes

Description:

Gregarious wading bird of the ibis and spoonbill family.

Habitat:

Gulf Coast of the United States

Notes:

The Roseate Spoonbill is 80 cm (31 in) tall, with a 120–130 cm (47–51 in) wingspan. It has long legs, a long neck, and a long, spatulate bill. Adults have a bare greenish head ("golden buff" when breeding) and a white neck, back, and breast (with a tuft of pink feathers in the center when breeding), and are otherwise a deep pink. The bill is grey. There is no significant sexual dimorphism.

Like the American Flamingo, their pink color is diet-derived, consisting of the carotenoid pigment canthaxanthin. Another carotenoid, astaxanthin, can also be found deposited in flight and body feathers. The colors can range from pale pink to bright magenta, depending on age and location. Unlike herons, spoonbills fly with their necks outstretched. They alternate groups of stiff, shallow wingbeats with glides.

Congratulation Michelle for the SOTD....The photograph deserve to be.
Michelle, we were disappointed you didn't win the NWF photo challenge and wanted to make sure your photo earned the recognition it deserved. Congratulations for capturing a beautiful series.
Spotting of the Day! "Roseate Spoonbills are one of the most striking and distinctive birds found in North America. They use their spoon-like beaks to catch small animals in the water." Some have been able 2 vote more than once. Some not. When I emailed 2 inquire I got an answer that was so far fro the question I asked I have no idea
damn, you're a little behind again. Is this a "vote early, vote often" opportunity? I just voted, can I do it again?
it was a tie at 527 and is a tie at 529 too, so I am wondering how is he doing that?? Thank You, Today is the LAST DAY to Vote THANKS http://www.nwf.org/News-and-Magazines/National-Wildlife/Flickr-Photo-Challenge.aspx

National Wildlife Photo Challenge - National Wildlife Federation www.nwf.org This Picture was also selected as 1 of 6 finalist in the above contest, now it is up to votes for it to win, It is doing very well, but seem to be neck and neck with the bear picture, he is a professional photographer , I am not, If anyone would like to vote the link is above and I appreciate any votes for my pic, Voting ends Tomorrow Nov,4th Thanks, and lots of you guys ought to also enter this contest , It is bi monthly, you win nothing but bragging rights, but it does get your picture out there, I usually just take them to share and bring into my pre school class for the kids to learn, but not so bad to get these beautiful creature more attention either
ok I did, THANKS, I usually yak in the gulf and bay, so I guess just about everything I have a pic of can go in that Mission
Select this as a mission by pasting it in your browser address bar: "http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/912002" and click on "join this mission" then go to "edit spotting" and add the mission. Hope this helps.
Nance I still remember P.Young's spottings came from same Tampa bay... And some assigned to Gulf Oil spill affected related mission.
Not a bad idea Ashish. Largo/Tampa is considerably south of the bulk of the oil spill damage, but the effects of all the chemicals in the Gulf is still unknown. This photo does show evidence of healthy populations in the Gulf of Mexico. (and Michelle I'm sure appreciates your support.)
This spotting is very important as it is sign of recovery of wild life severely affected by Oil spill in Mexican Gulf. Need to assign that mission to this spotting...!!
Wish you Good Luck... Nancy's efforts to get more vote for your spotting should comes true..!!
Thank you. I got these while kayaking. The 1 pic is a finalist in the NWF phto contest now it I up 2 voters 2 pic the winner. I am neck and neck with a prof photog. Voting ends tomrrow.
