Field Notes

Description:

Small yellowish orange bees with greenish eyes that hover in front of the entrance to their hive. The entrance on this one was a translucent waxy tube that came out of a tree trunk. I've seen the color of the entrance tube vary though, maybe due to different sources of resin.

Habitat:

Seasonally dry forest in Diria NP.

Notes:

These are fairly common throughout Costa Rica. The locals call them Mariolas and the nests are sometimes harvested for the honey, which is said to be helpful against eye infections. They are pretty peaceful generally not being bothered by someone being very close to the nest.
