Field Notes

Description:

Distinctive stout dark bill, angular head shape ~ forehead bump ~
The bloom is off the rose as these Loons head for warmer waters - the distinctive colors are fading fast ~ but they'll be back to breed again.

Habitat:

considered a Holarctic Breeder ~ the bulk nesting in Canada. Montana has a few breeding areas.

Notes:

also seen but not photographed: 3 Greater White-fronted Geese Uncommon and my first Surf Scoters! quite Rare for this area. Lots of coots, Western Grebes, ~ we saw about 35 species of birds on our Audubon outing today.
