Description:

Spotted outside the village by the roadside - My local plant book informs that it was named after a Prince Maximilian zu Wied (1782-1867) of the Prussian army who travelled North America and eventually became devoted to natural history, ethnology and exploration. My local book lists many similar looking plants from the Aster family.http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/prairie/plantx/mx_sunflowerx.htm

Habitat:

Prairies, barren spaces.

Notes:

Perennial Herb, 2 to 10 ft high - short rhizomes and crown bud, stems with short appressed white hairs. Leaves alternate, lanceolate. Flowers: Ray yellow.
