Field Notes

Description:

The long-winged harrier is a species of bird of prey, native to South America. There are two forms: one with a light breast (that is the one featured in this series) and one with a dark breast. It normally hunts alone in wetlands and marshes. This one was spotted in the wetlands of Arroyo Maldonado near La Barra. In the last photo you can see a Brown-and-yellow marshbird trying to scare the harrier off.

Habitat:

Its natural habitats are dry savanna, subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland, swamps, and heavily degraded former forest.
